The jail was named ‘Cellular’ due to its individual cells created for solitary confinement.

The site has also been converted into a museum with photos of freedom fighters. It also has an art gallery and a library with books on the freedom movement. The infrastructure of the jail also stands out as a very attractive site. A light and sound show is organised every evening which portrays beautifully the whole story of how the cellular jail was built, used and then abandoned.
